The Foundation of a Healthy Smile
Dental checkups are the cornerstone of preventive care. At our Headon office, every checkup is thorough, unhurried, and designed to give you a complete picture of your oral health. We take the time to assess, explain, and plan so that every patient leaves informed and confident about where their smile stands.

Early Detection, Better Outcomes
Many oral health concerns, including cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer, develop gradually and are often asymptomatic in their early stages. Routine visits allow us to identify these changes while they’re still simple to address, sparing patients more involved treatment down the road. The earlier we catch something, the more options you have.
A Baseline Worth Building
Every checkup contributes to a growing record of your oral health. Over time, this history allows us to track subtle changes that would be impossible to notice from a single visit in isolation. Changes in gum recession, tooth wear, and bone levels only become visible when compared against a consistent baseline. The longer you’re with us, the more precisely we can monitor and protect your smile.
Care Tailored to You
No two patients have the same oral health history, risk factors, or goals. At each checkup, we take your full picture into account and provide guidance that reflects your specific situation, whether you’re managing a history of sensitivity, monitoring a particular concern, or simply maintaining an already healthy smile.
How Often Should I Come In?
For most patients, every six months is the recommended standard. That said, the right frequency depends on your individual oral health. You may benefit from more frequent visits if you:
- Have a history of gum disease or are currently managing active gum inflammation
- Are at a higher risk for cavities due to diet, dry mouth, or other contributing factors
- Are undergoing orthodontic treatment, which requires closer monitoring of gum health
- Have existing restorations that benefit from regular assessment
- Are pregnant, as hormonal changes can affect gum health during this period
We'll give you a clear, personalized recommendation at your first visit and revisit it as your oral health evolves.
Keeping Your Smile Healthy Between Visits
What you do at home between appointments plays a meaningful role in your long-term oral health. Here are the habits that make the biggest difference:
- Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, spending at least two minutes to clean all surfaces thoroughly
- Floss once a day to remove plaque and food debris from between teeth, where your toothbrush cannot reach
- Stay hydrated throughout the day, as saliva plays an important role in neutralizing acids and protecting enamel
- Limit frequent snacking and sugary or acidic drinks, which contribute to enamel wear and cavity formation over time
- Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are visibly worn
- Wear a mouthguard during contact sports to protect your teeth from impact injuries

What to Expect at Your Next Checkup
Every checkup at our Headon office follows a thorough, well-organized process designed to give us the most complete picture of your oral health possible.
Complimentary Digital Scan
Every new patient receives a complimentary digital scan using the 3D scanner. This scan creates a precise, detailed model of your teeth and gums that serves as a permanent baseline for your oral health. At future visits, we use scan overlay technology to overlay new scans against this baseline, allowing us to detect subtle changes over time, including early tooth wear, shifting, and gum recession, that would be difficult to track with a visual exam alone. It is a genuinely useful clinical tool included in your first visit at no additional cost.
Teeth Cleaning
Your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gum line, addressing buildup in areas that regular brushing and flossing cannot fully reach. Your teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and leave a smooth, clean finish. Gum tissue is assessed throughout, with any areas of inflammation or recession noted for monitoring.
Digital X-rays
Digital X-rays provide a clear view of the structures beneath the surface, including the spaces between teeth, the roots, and the supporting bone. They appear on screen immediately, allowing your dentist to review findings with you in real time. X-rays are typically recommended once a year for most patients, with frequency determined by your individual history and clinical needs.
Dental Exam
Your dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, and existing restorations. Any findings are explained clearly, and treatment is only recommended when it is genuinely needed. Concerns worth monitoring rather than treating immediately are documented and tracked at future visits.
Oral Cancer Screening
Every checkup includes a visual and physical screening of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early, and routine screening is one of the most straightforward ways to stay ahead of it. The process is quick, painless, and a standard part of every visit.
