Healthy Smiles Start with Regular Preventive Visits

Dental Checkups in Southeast Burlington, ON

Regular checkups at our LIV office keep your oral health on track and your treatment straightforward. Book your appointment today.

The Most Important Appointment You’ll Keep

Most oral health concerns develop gradually and without obvious symptoms. Cavities, gum disease, and even oral cancer can progress significantly before a patient notices anything wrong. Regular checkups at our LIV office are how we stay ahead of those changes, identifying concerns while they are still straightforward to address and giving patients the information they need to make good decisions about their care.

Patterns You Can Only See Over Time

A single checkup shows us where your oral health is today. Consistent checkups over time show us how it is changing. Gradual shifts in gum health, bone levels, and tooth wear are difficult to detect from any one visit in isolation, but become clearly visible when tracked against a reliable record. The longer you are with us, the more clinical value each visit carries.

Guidance Specific to Your Situation

Diet, medications, existing dental work, and lifestyle all affect what your teeth and gums need from both a home care routine and professional treatment. At each checkup, we factor all of that in. Patients with dry mouth caused by medication need different guidance than patients with a high-sugar diet or a history of gum disease. Every recommendation we make reflects your actual situation.

Treatment Only When It Is Needed

We recommend treatment when there is a clear clinical reason for it, and we explain that reason before anything is scheduled. When something is better monitored than treated immediately, we document it carefully and track it at every subsequent visit. Patients always leave knowing exactly what was found, what it means, and what, if anything, needs to happen next.

How Often Should You Come In?

Every six months is the right starting point for most patients, but the appropriate frequency depends on your individual oral health profile. More frequent visits are worth considering if you:

  • Are managing active gum disease or have a history of periodontal concerns
  • Have a higher-than-average cavity risk due to diet, dry mouth, or other contributing factors
  • Are currently in orthodontic treatment, which requires closer monitoring of gum health
  • Have existing restorations that benefit from more regular assessment
  • Are pregnant, as hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect gum tissue health

We'll give you a clear, personalized recommendation at your first visit and revisit it as your oral health evolves.

Keeping Your Smile Healthy Between Visits

Professional cleanings address what home care cannot fully reach, but what you do between appointments directly affects the condition of your teeth and gums when you come back in. The habits that make the biggest difference:

  • Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, spending at least two minutes covering all surfaces thoroughly
  • Floss once a day to clear plaque and debris from between teeth, where a toothbrush cannot reach
  • Drink water throughout the day to support saliva production, which neutralizes acids and helps protect enamel
  • Limit frequent snacking and acidic or sugary drinks, which create conditions that promote decay over time
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or earlier when bristles show wear
  • Use a properly fitted mouthguard during contact sports to protect your teeth from impact injuries

What to expect

What to Expect at Your Next Checkup

Every checkup at our LIV office follows a thorough, well-organized process designed to give us the most complete picture of your oral health possible.

Complimentary Digital Scan

Every new patient at our LIV office receives a complimentary digital scan using the 3D scanner. The scan produces a precise three-dimensional model of your teeth and gums that serves as your clinical baseline. At future visits, scan overlay technology compares new scans against that baseline, making subtle changes visible: early tooth wear, minor positional shifts, and gradual gum recession that would otherwise go undetected until they become more significant concerns. It is included in your first visit at no additional charge.

Teeth Cleaning

Your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth and along the gum line. Plaque that is not fully cleared at home hardens into tartar over time, which brushing alone cannot remove and which drives gum inflammation when left in place. Your teeth are then polished and your gum tissue is assessed, with any areas of concern documented as part of your ongoing record.

Digital X-rays

Digital X-rays provide a view of the areas that cannot be assessed visually: the spaces between teeth, the roots, and the supporting bone. They appear on screen immediately, allowing your dentist to review findings with you during the appointment rather than after. For most patients, X-rays are recommended once a year, with frequency adjusted based on your individual history and risk level.

Dental Exam

Your dentist examines your teeth, gums, bite, and any existing restorations. Every finding is explained in plain language. Treatment is recommended only when there is a clear clinical reason for it, and anything worth watching but not yet treating is documented and followed at your next visit so nothing slips through.

Oral Cancer Screening

A visual and physical screening of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat is included at every checkup. Oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early, and the window for effective treatment is significantly wider at an earlier stage. The process takes only a few minutes and is a standard part of every visit regardless of age or risk profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a cleaning and a checkup?
A cleaning refers specifically to the hygiene component of your appointment: scaling and polishing. A checkup encompasses the full visit: cleaning, X-rays, dental exam, and oral cancer screening. At our LIV office, all of these are completed together at your regular appointment so nothing is deferred or missed.
What is tartar and why can it only be removed professionally?
Tartar forms when plaque that has not been fully removed through brushing and flossing mineralizes on the tooth surface. Once hardened, it cannot be cleared with a toothbrush: it requires professional scaling instruments. Left in place along the gum line, tartar is the primary driver of gum inflammation and, over time, gum disease.
Are dental checkups uncomfortable?
For most patients, a routine checkup is comfortable throughout. If your gums are sensitive or it has been some time since your last visit, your hygienist will adjust their approach based on your feedback and work carefully throughout the appointment.
What happens if a problem is found at my checkup?
Your dentist will explain what was found, where it is, what treatment involves, and what your options are. Nothing is scheduled without your full understanding and agreement. For concerns that do not yet require immediate treatment, we document them and monitor them at subsequent visits.
How are X-ray frequencies determined?
X-rays are recommended based on your individual clinical profile, typically once a year for most patients. Patients at lower risk may need them less frequently. If you are new to our LIV office, we will request your records from your previous provider so we have a complete picture from your first visit.
What is an oral cancer screening?
A brief, painless visual and physical examination of the soft tissues of the mouth and throat. It is a standard part of every checkup at our LIV office. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, which is why it is included at every visit.
How long will my appointment take?
Most routine checkup and cleaning appointments take approximately 60 minutes. If it has been some time since your last visit or additional assessments are needed, it may run a little longer. We will give you an accurate estimate when you book.
What if I am nervous about coming in?
Let us know when you book. Our team takes a calm, check-in-focused approach throughout every appointment, and knowing ahead of time that anxiety is a factor allows us to make sure the right support is in place before you arrive.
Do you see children at our LIV office?
Yes. We welcome children and make every visit a positive experience. Early, consistent checkups allow us to monitor development, apply preventive treatments, and build a comfortable foundation with dental care that carries forward as children grow.
What if I have not been to the dentist in a long time?
Book an appointment. We will conduct a thorough assessment, explain everything we find clearly, and put together a realistic plan going forward. Our focus is entirely on where you are now and how we can help from here.
