Are Dental Implants Right for You?

More Than a Cosmetic Fix

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth lose their lateral support and begin to shift. The jawbone at the site loses density without a root to stimulate it. Chewing function and bite alignment change over time. A dental implant replaces both the root and the visible tooth, addressing all of these consequences with a single, permanent restoration.

At our LIV office, your implant treatment is completed in-house from consultation through to crown placement by the same team at every stage.

It Functions Like a Natural Tooth

A dental implant is anchored into the jawbone, where it fuses with the surrounding bone over several months. The custom porcelain crown is matched to the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. Once complete, you chew normally, brush and floss as usual, and maintain it with the same routine as the rest of your smile.

It Protects Your Jaw Long Term

Because the implant replaces the tooth root, it continues to stimulate the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. This preserves bone density and keeps the neighbouring teeth stable: outcomes no other tooth replacement option provides.

No Surprises at Any Stage

At your consultation, we assess your gums, surrounding teeth, and bone levels and give you a clear picture of your options and timeline. If preparatory steps are needed before placement, we explain what’s involved upfront. Nothing is scheduled until you have the full picture.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed surgically into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over several months, the post fuses with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration, creating a stable and permanent foundation. A custom porcelain crown is then attached, completing the restoration. The finished implant is fixed in place, matched to your surrounding teeth, and maintained with the same daily routine as your natural teeth.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Implants?

Most healthy adults with a missing tooth are strong candidates. At your consultation, we assess:

  • The health of your gums and surrounding teeth
  • The density and volume of the jawbone at the implant site
  • Your overall health and any factors that may affect healing
  • Whether any preparatory treatment is needed before placement

If bone density needs to be built up before placement, we’ll explain what that involves and refer you to the appropriate provider.

Every patient leaves their consultation with a clear understanding of their options and next steps.

Full Mouth Reconstruction

For patients dealing with multiple missing, damaged, or severely worn teeth, an implant may be one component of a broader treatment plan. Full mouth reconstruction combines restorative treatments to restore the function, health, and appearance of the smile. This may include:

  • Dental implants
  • Crowns and bridges
  • Periodontal therapy
  • Root canal treatment

Every plan is built around your specific clinical situation and goals: at your consultation, we outline a clear, sequenced treatment plan so you understand what’s involved, in what order, and what the outcome will look like before anything begins. Where care beyond what we provide in-house is needed, we’ll refer you to the appropriate provider and keep your treatment coordinated throughout.

Act Sooner Rather Than Later

Replacing a missing tooth while the surrounding bone and neighbouring teeth are still in good condition gives us the most straightforward path to a stable, long-lasting result. The sooner a gap is addressed, the more predictable the outcome.

What to expect

What to Expect During Your Dental Implant Treatment

Implant treatment is completed in stages over several months. Each stage is straightforward, and we make sure you know exactly what to expect before every appointment.

Step one

Consultation and Assessment

Your dentist assesses your gum tissue, surrounding teeth, and bone levels at the implant site. We discuss your goals, answer your questions, and confirm whether you’re a suitable candidate. Any preparatory steps are outlined clearly before any decisions are made.

Step two

Implant Placement

The titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Sedation is available for patients who’d like additional support. Once in place, the implant is left to integrate with the surrounding bone. A temporary restoration may be placed during this period to maintain your comfort and appearance while you heal.

Step three

Integration

Over the following months, the implant fuses with the jawbone through osseointegration. We monitor your healing throughout and confirm when you’re ready to move to the next stage.

Step four

Crown Placement

Once integration is complete, we take precise impressions and have your custom porcelain crown fabricated to match your surrounding teeth. When it’s ready, the crown is attached and carefully adjusted for fit and bite. At this point, your restoration is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental implants last?
With consistent oral hygiene and regular checkups, a dental implant can last many years and in many cases a lifetime. The porcelain crown may need to be replaced over time due to normal wear, but the implant post itself is designed as a permanent restoration.
Is the placement procedure painful?
Implant placement is performed under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Some mild soreness in the days following is normal and manageable. Sedation is available for patients who’d like additional support during the appointment.
How long does the full treatment take?
From placement to final crown, treatment typically takes several months to allow adequate time for osseointegration. The exact timeline depends on your individual healing and whether any preparatory steps were needed. We provide a realistic estimate at your consultation.
Am I a good candidate?
Most healthy adults with a missing tooth are strong candidates. The key factors are gum health, jawbone density at the implant site, and overall health. A consultation is the most reliable way to find out, and we’ll give you a clear, honest answer based on a thorough assessment.
What if I don’t have enough bone for an implant?
If the bone at the implant site needs to be built up before placement, we’ll explain what that involves and refer you to the appropriate provider. Once the site is ready, treatment can proceed as planned.
How do I care for a dental implant?
Implants are maintained just like natural teeth. Brush twice daily, floss carefully around the implant, and attend your regular hygiene appointments. Keeping the surrounding gum tissue healthy is important for the long-term stability of the restoration.
Will my implant look natural?
Yes. The porcelain crown is custom-fabricated to match the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. Most patients find their implant is indistinguishable from their natural teeth.
Is there a waiting period after a tooth extraction?
In most cases, yes. The extraction site needs adequate time to heal before an implant can be placed. We’ll assess the site at your consultation and give you a clear timeline.
Can an implant replace more than one tooth?
A single implant replaces one missing tooth. For patients with multiple missing teeth, we’ll discuss the most appropriate options for your specific situation at your consultation.
What is full mouth reconstruction and how does it differ from a single implant?
A single implant replaces one missing tooth. Full mouth reconstruction addresses multiple teeth that are missing, damaged, or severely worn, using a combination of restorative treatments tailored to your specific situation. We assess your full oral health picture at your consultation and outline exactly what’s involved before any treatment begins.
Is a dental implant covered by insurance?
Coverage varies significantly between plans. We recommend checking with your provider before your consultation and are happy to help you understand your benefits and discuss costs clearly before treatment begins.
