Hygiene Cleanings in Southeast Burlington, ON

Enjoy that just-cleaned feeling and gums you can feel good about, with a hygienist who lets you set the pace. Book an appointment at our LIV office.

Healthy Gums Begin in the Hygiene Chair

Your hygiene cleaning removes the hardened buildup your toothbrush leaves behind and gives your gums the care they need to stay strong. It's also the visit where your hygienist gets to know your mouth, so changes are caught while they are still small. At LIV, we want every cleaning to feel like a visit to your home away from home.

Welcome Back, However Long It's Been

Coming in after a long break takes courage, and our team makes that first step feel easy. New patients begin in the hygiene room for charting and diagnostics, and the cleaning starts before the dentist comes in. Many patients feel more at ease knowing their teeth will be clean by the time of their exam, and your hygienist explains everything kindly and in plain language.

You Set the Pace

Comfort is part of how our hygienists work, from the first minute of your visit to the last. Our team is trained to keep you comfortable throughout cleanings, and tender spots can be soothed with a topical numbing gel. A ceiling-mounted TV, music, and a cozy blanket give you something else to focus on, and if you'd like laughing gas, we can book your cleaning at our sister office in Headon. If something hurts, we stop.

Planned Around Your Needs

Every cleaning gives us new information about your gums, and that information shapes your care. Your hygienist records the depth of the space around each tooth so we can spot gums that are starting to pull away. Your visits are then spaced to match how quickly buildup forms for you. When deeper buildup needs more attention, we'll explain how non-surgical gum therapy can help.

Why the Gumline Matters Most

Gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, starts at the gumline and often develops slowly and quietly. Here is what buildup can do over time if it stays in place:

  • Bacteria trigger inflammation. The soft plaque that forms each day contains bacteria that irritate your gums. You might notice tenderness or a little pink in the sink when you brush.
  • Hardened tartar keeps the problem going. Plaque that stays on your teeth hardens into tartar. Only professional tools can remove it, and its rough surface collects even more plaque.
  • Pockets form below the gumline. As the gums stay inflamed, they can separate from the teeth and form pockets. These pockets trap bacteria where daily brushing and flossing can't reach.
  • Bone and tissue start to break down. If the infection continues, it can damage the bone and tissue that anchor your teeth. Teeth can loosen and, in time, may be lost.

The good news is that gum disease is largely preventable. Regular hygiene cleanings stop this cycle early, which keeps treatment simpler and your lifetime dental costs lower.

How to Know It’s Time for Your Cleaning

Everyone benefits from regular hygiene visits, and these situations are a good reason to book one soon:

  • Pink in the sink after brushing. Gums that bleed easily are often reacting to plaque, and a professional cleaning is usually the first step to calming them.
  • Gums that look red, swollen, or puffy. Healthy gums are firm and fit snugly around each tooth, so changes in colour or shape are worth a closer look.
  • A long gap since your last visit. The longer tartar sits, the more it can irritate your gums, so getting back on schedule protects the health you have.
  • Breath that stays stale even after brushing. Bacteria hiding along and under the gumline are a common cause, and a cleaning clears them out.
  • Dental work you want to protect. Crowns, bridges, and implants rely on healthy gums around them, and regular cleanings help keep that tissue strong.
  • Past gum disease treatment. Ongoing hygiene visits help maintain your results and give us a chance to spot any return early.

What to expect

Your Cleaning, Step by Step

Here's how a typical hygiene visit unfolds at our LIV office.

Step one

Get Comfortable

Grab a pillow and blanket, pick something to watch or listen to, and tell your hygienist about any sore spots or worries. They can apply numbing gel to sensitive areas and pause whenever you need a break.

Step two

Gum Health Check

Your hygienist uses a slim, gentle instrument to measure the space where each tooth meets the gum. These readings are added to your record, so each visit can be compared with the last.

Step three

Remove the Buildup

Plaque and tartar are carefully cleared from your teeth, along your gumline, and just underneath it. Your hygienist will check in throughout, and you can raise a hand for a break whenever you need one.

Step four

Polish for a Smooth Finish

A gentle polish lifts surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling glassy smooth, which helps slow new plaque from sticking. Your hygienist finishes by flossing between each tooth.

Step five

Talk Through What's Next

Your hygienist will walk you through your gum readings and suggest when to come back. If an area needs more than a regular cleaning, you'll hear why and what your options are before anything is booked.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm embarrassed about how long it has been. What will my cleaning be like?
Your hygienist will welcome you back and focus on where your teeth and gums are today. If there's a lot of buildup, your cleaning may be spread over more than one visit to keep you comfortable. You'll leave knowing exactly where you stand and what comes next.
What are gum pocket measurements?
They are small measurements, in millimetres, of the space between each tooth and the surrounding gum. Healthy gums usually fit snugly, so the readings stay small. Higher readings can mean the gum is pulling away, and your hygienist will explain what your numbers mean.
Will polishing remove stains from my teeth?
Polishing removes many surface stains from things like coffee, tea, and red wine, and leaves your teeth feeling smooth. Deeper stains inside the tooth usually need a whitening treatment. Your hygienist can let you know which type of staining you have.
What if I'd like laughing gas for my cleaning?
Laughing gas is offered at our sister office, The Dental Manor at Headon. If it would help you feel more at ease, we can book your cleaning there. Your records are already shared between offices, and pricing is the same at both.
When does a regular cleaning turn into gum therapy?
If your gum measurements show deeper pockets, or tartar has collected below the gumline, a regular cleaning may not reach it all. In that case, your dentist may recommend non-surgical gum therapy, such as scaling and root planing, which cleans below the gums and smooths the roots so the gums can reattach. We'll explain your options and answer your questions first.
Is it normal for my gums to bleed while I'm being cleaned?
It is common, especially if it has been a while since your last cleaning. Bleeding is usually a sign of inflamed gums, and it tends to ease as your gums get healthier with regular cleanings and daily flossing. Your hygienist will keep track of where it happens.
How often should I book a hygiene cleaning?
Many patients come in twice a year, though some benefit from more frequent visits. Your hygienist will base the recommendation on your gum readings, how quickly tartar forms, and your dental history. We'll review it at each visit as your needs change.
What can be done if cleanings make my teeth feel sore?
Let your hygienist know at the start of your visit. They can apply a topical numbing gel to sensitive areas, check in with you often, and adjust their approach. If something hurts, we stop.
Should I expect sensitivity once my cleaning is done?
Some people feel mild sensitivity for a day or two, especially after a lot of tartar has been removed. It usually fades on its own. If it lingers, call us and we'll help you find relief.
Will my insurance pay for my cleaning?
Most dental plans include some coverage for hygiene cleanings, and the amount depends on your plan. We follow the Ontario Dental Association fee guide, accept all insurance providers, and submit claims for you. Any costs are discussed before your treatment.
