Get a Guard Shaped to Your Bite

Grinding and clenching put heavy pressure on your teeth for hours at a time. A custom nightguard slips over your teeth at bedtime and takes that pressure for you. We design yours from a 3D scan, so it lines up with your bite and feels comfortable to wear.

Less Wear on Every Tooth

A nightguard gives the force of grinding a safer place to land. Your teeth press into the guard, which takes the friction and helps keep your enamel strong. Fillings, crowns, and bridges stay protected too, so they can serve you longer. It fits our care philosophy: protect healthy teeth today so they need less treatment later.

Wake Up Feeling Looser

Hours of clenching can leave your jaw stiff and your temples aching before the day even starts. A nightguard spreads the pressure evenly across your teeth, which can help your jaw muscles relax. Many patients find mornings feel easier once the guard becomes part of their bedtime routine. Your dentist will ask how you're doing at follow-ups and adjust the guard if needed.

A Quick, Contact-Free Scan

A short scan with our scanner wand creates an accurate 3D model of your teeth and bite. The process is contact-free, with no trays or impression putty, so you can breathe and swallow normally throughout. Your model appears on screen as we go, and your dentist can point out any wear while you watch. Your guard is then made from that model to fit your teeth closely.

How Clenching Damages Teeth

Bruxism is the clinical term for grinding or clenching your teeth. It often goes unnoticed for years because it happens in your sleep. Left unprotected, teeth and jaws can show:

  • Wear you can see. Biting edges slowly flatten, which can make teeth look shorter and change the look of your smile.
  • Sensitivity that creeps in. As enamel thins, cold drinks and sweet foods can start to sting.
  • Small fractures. Constant pressure can crack teeth and chip fillings, which may need repair down the road.
  • Tension that builds in the jaw. Muscles that never get a break overnight can feel stiff and sore during the day.

Every new patient at LIV receives a complimentary digital scan. With scan overlay, we compare your future scans against that first one, so early wear shows up while protecting your teeth is still simple and affordable.

Is a Nightguard Right for You?

Your body often leaves clues about what your jaw does overnight. Ask us about a nightguard if any of these sound familiar:

  • A stiff or achy jaw at sunrise. Muscles that clench all night often feel worn out by morning.
  • Tension headaches that start your day. Clenching strains the muscles near your temples, which can trigger a dull headache.
  • Chipped, flat, or worn tooth edges. Your dentist may spot this wear at a checkup before you notice it yourself.
  • Teeth that feel more sensitive than before. Thinning enamel can make hot and cold foods more noticeable.
  • Someone has heard you grinding. A partner, parent, or roommate is often the first to catch it.
  • Dental work that chips or cracks often. Repeated damage can be a sign of heavy force while you sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is bruxism, and how common is it?
Bruxism means grinding or clenching your teeth, most often during sleep. It's a common concern for adults and some children, and it's very manageable. A custom nightguard is one of the simplest ways to protect your teeth from it.
What causes teeth grinding and clenching?
Grinding can be linked to stress, sleep habits, and the way your teeth come together. The cause often varies from person to person. Your dentist will look at your teeth and jaw and talk with you about what may be playing a role.
How long does it take to get used to a nightguard?
Most people adjust within the first couple of weeks of nightly wear. You might notice a little extra saliva or awareness of the guard at first, which usually fades. If it feels tight or uncomfortable, we'll adjust it for you.
How does a digital scan compare to impression molds?
The scanner wand records your teeth in 3D with a light, contact-free touch, and you see the results on screen right away. Patients find it a much more comfortable experience, especially those with a sensitive gag reflex. The detailed model also helps your guard fit well.
Is a store-bought guard good enough?
Drugstore guards are made to fit many mouths, so they can feel loose or bulky and often end up left on the nightstand. A custom guard follows the shape of your teeth and bite, which makes it easier to wear every night. Your dentist can help you weigh the options.
Should I wear my nightguard during the day?
Most people wear their nightguard only while sleeping. If you notice yourself clenching during the day too, mention it to your dentist. They can suggest what makes sense for you.
What if my jaw still aches while I'm wearing my nightguard?
Let your dentist know. We may adjust the guard or take a closer look at your jaw joint and muscles. Together, we'll find the next step that fits your situation.
Can children grind their teeth too?
Yes, some children grind, especially while baby teeth are coming and going. Many kids outgrow it. Your dentist will check your child's teeth for wear and let you know whether anything needs attention.
What's the best way to care for my nightguard?
Rinse it, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush, and let it air-dry before placing it in its case. Keep it away from heat, which can change its shape, and out of reach of pets, who love to chew them. Bring it to your checkups so we can give it a look.
Does insurance help pay for a nightguard?
Many plans offer some coverage, though it varies by provider and policy. We follow the Ontario Dental Association fee guide and submit claims directly for you. Before your guard is made, we'll review the cost with you so you can plan ahead.
