A Guard That Fits Your Game

The best mouthguard is the one that stays in from warm-up to the final buzzer. At LIV, we craft custom sports guards for players of every age from a 3D digital scan. The result is a guard that holds your teeth comfortably, so you can focus on the play.

Comfort That Stays in Place

Because your guard is built from a 3D model of your own teeth, it settles into place and stays there through hits, sprints, and scrambles. Players can keep their jaw relaxed during play. A comfortable guard is far less likely to get chewed, flipped out, or tucked into a helmet strap. That means it's protecting their teeth when it counts.

Clear Calls and Easy Breathing

A close-fitting guard leaves more room for air and words. Athletes can breathe hard during a long shift, shout to teammates, and sip water on the bench with the guard in place. That makes it simple to wear for a whole practice or game. Kids and teens are far more likely to keep a guard in when it feels light and stays out of their way.

Refits for Growing Players

Children's mouths change quickly as baby teeth fall out and adult teeth arrive. A guard that fit well last season may feel loose or tight this year. We check your child's guard at regular visits and can rescan to make a new one when their smile outgrows it. That keeps protection steady from their first season through their teen years.

The Most Important Sports Gear

Helmets and pads protect the body, and a mouthguard does the same job for your smile. Wearing one during play helps guard against:

  • Broken or chipped teeth. A guard helps spread the force of a hit across your teeth and away from any single tooth.
  • Teeth knocked loose or out. Protecting an adult tooth from injury helps your child avoid long, involved repair work later.
  • Lip and cheek injuries. Covering the edges of your teeth helps keep soft tissue safer during collisions and falls.
  • Broken brackets and damaged crowns. A guard adds a cushion between hard dental work and the force of contact.

Prevention is at the heart of how Dr. Manor practises, and a mouthguard is one of the easiest ways to keep a healthy smile healthy.

Players Who Benefit Most

A custom sports mouthguard is a smart pick for any athlete in a sport with contact, falls, or flying gear, such as:

  • Young players starting out. Kids in house league hockey, soccer, and basketball take plenty of tumbles, and a guard helps protect the adult teeth coming in.
  • High school and rep athletes. Football, rugby, and lacrosse bring faster play and harder contact, and a well-fitted guard keeps up with them.
  • Grown-ups who still play. Rec hockey, ball hockey, and martial arts are just as tough on teeth at 40 as at 14.
  • Teens with braces. Brackets can cut the inside of the lips during a hit, so ask us about a guard option that works with orthodontic treatment.
  • Anyone with dental work. A guard helps keep crowns, bridges, and implants safer every time you play.

What to expect

How Your Guard Comes Together

Most players need two visits, one for the scan and one for the fitting.

Step one

A Chat About Your Sport

Tell us what you play, how often you're on the ice or field, and about any past mouth injuries. Your dentist examines your teeth and bite to plan your guard.

Step two

A Quick Digital Scan

Our 3D scanner creates a 3D model of your teeth while you sit back and relax. It's a light, contact-free process that younger patients handle with ease.

Step three

Building Your Mouthguard

Your guard is crafted from that model to follow the shape of your teeth. We'll reach out when it's ready, so book early if a new season is coming up.

Step four

Try It On

At your fitting, we check the fit and comfort, and you'll try talking and biting with the guard in. We fine-tune anything that feels off and show you how to rinse and store it.

Step five

Season-to-Season Check-Ins

Bring your guard to your regular checkups. We'll look for wear and check whether growing teeth mean it's time for a new one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do adults need custom sports mouthguards too?
Yes, if you play a sport with contact or falls. Adult teeth and dental work can be injured at any age, and a guard made from your scan is comfortable enough to wear every game. We make custom guards for patients of every age.
Is a custom mouthguard worth it for my teen?
A guard only helps if your teen wears it, and a custom fit makes that much more likely. It stays in place, lets them breathe and talk, and feels less bulky. Your dentist can help you decide based on their sport and their teeth.
What sports should my child wear a mouthguard for?
Hockey, football, rugby, lacrosse, and martial arts are the obvious ones. Basketball, soccer, and ball hockey involve elbows, balls, and falls too. If there's a chance of contact with another player, the ground, or equipment, a guard is a good idea.
How does the digital scan work?
A small wand moves around your teeth and captures thousands of pictures, which become a 3D model on the screen. It's painless, and we pause anytime you'd like a break. Kids often say watching their teeth appear is the best part.
Can my athlete breathe and speak normally with a custom guard?
Most players adjust quickly. Because the guard fits closely, it leaves more room for airflow and clearer speech than a bulky guard. If anything feels awkward after a few practices, bring it in and we'll take a look.
What if my child has braces?
A mouthguard is a smart idea during braces, since brackets and wires can injure the lips and cheeks during contact. Teeth shift during treatment, so the guard has to allow for that movement. Your dentist will recommend the right option for where your child is in treatment.
How do I know when my child needs a new guard?
Watch for a guard that feels loose, is hard to put in, has holes from chewing, or looks torn. Growing kids may outgrow theirs as new teeth arrive. We'll check the fit at each regular visit and let you know.
How should I clean a sports mouthguard?
Rinse it with cool water after every use and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush. Let it air-dry, then store it in a case with holes for airflow. Keep it away from heat and out of the bottom of the hockey bag.
What should we do if a tooth gets knocked out during a game?
Pick the tooth up by the top, keep it moist in milk or saliva, and call us right away. Acting quickly gives the tooth its best chance. Our emergency care page has more first-aid steps for game-day injuries.
Does dental insurance cover sports mouthguards?
Plans differ, and many include some coverage for custom mouthguards. Our fees follow the Ontario Dental Association fee guide, and we handle direct billing to your insurer. We'll walk you through the cost before your guard is made.
